How We Started

Work Vessels for Veterans was started in 2008 after John Niekrash, a Noank, CT lobsterman heard the story of a wounded warrior's dedication and service after having been severely injured in Iraq. John decided that his boat that had served him well for seventeen years should go to someone who had served his country. Our first "vessel," Krasher I was refurbished and donated for commercial fishing in Narragansett Bay, RI to a USMC Reservist who served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and a legacy was born.

WVFV is an ALL Volunteer Organization. 99% of ALL donated funds go directly to veterans. Less than 1% pays for overhead, insurance, and bookkeeping. We have no payroll costs and wonderful volunteers all across the nation.

\Here is a message from one of the 2900 injured veterans who have received over $3.9 million worth of equipment for self-employment from your donations to Work Vessels for Vets. They join us in saying, THANK YOU!

Work Vessels for Vets matches a veteran's needs with corporate and individual donors. As a 501 (c)(3) public charitable organization, WVFV maximizes gifts to qualified returning veterans by providing start-up funding, farm land, and agricultural opportunities, tools, equipment, vehicles, electronics, and products. Veteran recipients agree to "Pay it Forward" by hiring fellow vets in their growing businesses, and assisting their neighborhoods and communities.

Can your gift be matched? Make your gift go farther with a matching gift! Many companies match their employee’s charitable donations. Contact your human resources office to find out if there is a matching gift program at your company and let us know if you need help with any paperwork!

DONATE TO HONOR A VETERAN? We are proud to memorialize your loved one by using donations in memory of a veteran or friend to assist an injured veteran embarking on a new life as an entrepreneur.
